Waterstone’s and HMV: the endgame

An endgame which has now been going on in the public prints for much too long.  The list of names associated – some perhaps rightly, some doubtless wholly erroneously – is still getting longer.  Every Sunday paper appeared to posit a slightly different outcome; none of this helps morale within Waterstone’s or HMV, or improves the position that the new owners will inherit.

I’ve been privately speculating about outcomes – haven’t we all? – but I don’t see a lot of point in adding to the speculation here.  Once we have some hard news, then we can think again about how these two high street brands will develop, and the impact a new beginning will have on the cultural industries they help to support – cultural industries in which Britain is a world-leader.  In the meantime, good luck to everyone associated with both companies.
